This year’s first spotlight is on the majestic Andrea (Drea) Madrigal.  She originally hails from West Covina and is and is in her junior year.  Drea has the strength equivalent to one hundred women and uses it to overpower all of her opponents.  She was named Player of the Year in SCIAC 2014 and was the first Leopard to ever win the fall ITA.

1.) What is the most significant moment in your life so far?

I guess I’d have to say when I won the ITA. That’s easy.

A cactus, because it reminds me of the homeland.

Bonus Question) If you were shrunk to the size of a pencil and put into a blender, how would you get out?

Leos Take Texas!

We had a great time on our Annual President’s Day trip with a couple of great battles against UT-Dallas and UT-Tyler as well as some good ole fashioned team fun!

The trip started bright and early at LAX with a celebrity sighting of Lakers’ coach Mike D’Antoni. His words of good luck would prove to be helpful, as would ours on his :)

Next, we arrived in Dallas. The first night was full of a practice at the UT-Dallas courts before a team collaboration on a pasta dinner while screening The Hunger Games. Before long it was time to step out onto the courts for our first match. We came out with great energy and found our way to a doubles sweep. Andrea/Jeanette earned a win over the #9 regionally ranked team in the process. The energy carried over into singles where we found straight set wins at 1,3,5 and 6 singles while also showing great resolve at 2 and 4 singles, by Jeanette and Brooke, to win the 10 point match tiebreakers and cement the 9-0 win. Andrea earned a win over the #9 regionally ranked girl in singles in the process. After a great day on the court, the team chowed down on some Thai food before engulfing the biggest milkshakes known to man at Braum’s Creamery.

The next morning, we hit the road to Tyler and looked to finish the trip on a high note. UT Tyler came at us hard but we showed tremendous resolve to take 2 out of 3 doubles with a tiebreak win at 3 doubles and a colossal come from behind win at 2 doubles. Singles would prove to be a neck and neck battle with UT-Tyler earning wins at 4 and 6 singles before we responded with wins at 1 and 3 singles to go back on top and one win away from victory. Andrea’s win was over the #16 ranked girl in the region. At 2, Jeanette was in a back and forth slugfest, having won the first set before losing a neck and neck second set. Meanwhile, Allison was in the process of a comeback, having lost the first set before coming back to take the second and in a back and forth third set at the time of Jeanette’s split. Allison would go on to play with tremendous heart and poise to capture the third set breaker and clinch the match for the Leos. Shortly after, Jeanette would finish off an amazing comeback from 5-1 down in the 3rd set to notch a win over the #17 girl in the region and complete the 6-3 win. Post match, the team enjoyed some Texas BBQ before going out for some frozen custard.

It was a great trip for the girls as they played some great tennis while also having some great fun. Special thanks to all the families that were able to make the trek with us as well as thanks to all the families that have been to all of our matches so far this season. Stay tuned to the photos section as it will be updated periodically with photos from our team events and matches this season.
